Lalah Hathaway Releases Made in Chicago

Five-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer Lalah Hathaway has released her new album, Made in Chicago, via Hathaway Entertainment/SRG-ILS/Virgin. Rooted in warm, intimate, soulful vocals, the nine-track album grew out of a single image: Hathaway saw herself in a leather coat, looking out at Lake Michigan with the Chicago skyline in the distance. From there, a flood of music came back to her, echoing her childhood in the city.
The album arrives on what would have been the 81st birthday of Hathaway’s father, Chicago-born soul legend Donny Hathaway. Hathaway made the album with longtime collaborator and co-producer Phil Beaudreau, with contributions from saxophonists Amber Navran of Moonchild and Hailey Niswanger, along with flutist Elena Pinderhughes. The album includes the previously released singles “Can’t Let Go” and “47th Street,” the latter reflecting on Chicago’s South Side, Hathaway’s family history, and the community that shaped her.
Hathaway has also partnered with the Chicago Transit Authority to voice station announcements across the rail system. She will bring the new music to several stages across the U.S. this fall, including an October 11 appearance with Robert Glasper at New York’s Blue Note and a set on the Soul Train Cruise in November.
