BJRNCK Demonstrates Why She Is a Breakthrough Talent at Beat Kitchen

As the second day of Lollapalooza came to an end, the most fashionable festivalgoers lined up outside of Beat Kitchen, undeterred by the rain. With all the Lollapalooza after shows scattered throughout the city, it takes something special to make a set unforgettable. Rising stars BJRNCK and Jae Stephens accomplished exactly that. Chicago-born BJRNCK delivered a performance demonstrating that she is a force to be reckoned with.
From the moment she stepped on stage, BJRNCK commanded the room with remarkable vocal control, effortlessly moving between sentimental melodies, intricate runs, and relatable rap verses that showcased both technical precision and a versatility that has made her one of R&B’s rising stars. She opened her set with a couple of songs off her debut album, A Girl Like Me. Among them was the song “Body Right,” an anthem for women who know exactly what they want. BJRNCK demonstrated just how personal she can get with her music; something that resonated with the audience, as they sang along by the second time the chorus came along.
Song after song, it became clear that audience rapport is essential to BJRNCK. In between her vulnerable songwriting, her call-and-response verses encouraged audience participation that you see only among some of the most established pop stars. Each intimate line was paired with direct eye contact with her audience members, creating a special connection between listener and artist that made some of her more melancholic songs hit.
Her song “That’s the Move,” detailing a wild night out, featured an interpolation of Tag Team’s well-known “Whoomp! There it is!” allowing the audience to perform with her. It felt as if BJRNCK was giving her songs to the audience and encouraging them to make it their own. She also shared personal stories, like when she reflected on attending high school with Jae Stephens, reminiscing about where they started and how surreal it felt to now be performing alongside her at a Lollapalooza Aftershow. The story added another layer to a performance already built on sincerity.
Her covers were another highlight. Her performances of songs like “We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey and “One Wish” by Ray J gave us a look into the type of sounds that inspire her. Indeed, BJRNCK takes that late-early 2000s R&B sound and adapts it to modern tastes. The arrangements felt so natural that they sounded like originals, allowing her artistry to shine through. She closed off an electric set with her latest single “Coming Home” featuring Chicago rapper G Herbo and “Club” from her debut album.
A BJRNCK set feels like a gossip sesh with your best friend. Her vocal ability is undeniable, but it’s her storytelling, warmth, and ability to make every song, cover or original, feel deeply personal that truly sets her apart. If this Lollapalooza Aftershow is any indication, audiences would be wise to catch her now.
