Ecca Vandal Unleashes Explosive New Album LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW

Ecca Vandal has released her Loma Vista Recordings debut, LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW — a ferocious, shape-shifting statement that captures the full scope of her artistic identity. Arriving after years of momentum-building through major festival appearances, acclaimed support tours, and a breakout moment with “CRUISING TO SELF SOOTHE,” the album lands in the wake of her Coachella debut and ongoing dates with Deftones, cementing Vandal as one of heavy music’s most singular voices.

Rooted in punk but impossible to confine to any one genre, LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW thrives on tension and collision. Tracks like “EYES SHUT” and “DANCE IN DEBT” charge headfirst into hardcore, while bhangra rhythms, d-beat percussion, skaterock harmonics, and crushing guitar work weave through the record’s DNA. On the towering “DO IT ANYWAY,” Vandal rides a reggaeton pulse while channeling radical self-possession, echoing and reframing Jenny Holzer’s famous sentiment: “done with protecting every bit of me from what I want.”

Despite its restless sonic range, the album remains grounded by an unwavering punk ethos — a reflection of the environment, relationships, and emotional clarity that shaped it. As Vandal explains, the record is ultimately about stripping away distraction and reclaiming agency: “The systems. The trends. The illusions of connection. I find empowerment in being loud and noisy, especially as a woman in this global moment who grew up in a culture that told me I could not be those things.

Recorded and produced by Richie Buxton and Ecca Vandal in Buxton’s childhood bedroom, LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW emerged from nearly two years of intentional isolation and creative focus. Removed from the pressure of constant online visibility, the pair transformed a modest DIY setup into an immersive creative world of its own.

We cut out everything that didn’t serve us — the timelines, the metrics, the pressure to ‘stay visible’ online,” Vandal says. “We tuned out of the feed and turned inwards. In Richie’s childhood bedroom, we built a tiny home studio, four walls that became a universe. The internet was painfully slow, so we were truly disconnected from the online game… that little room became our whole world for nearly two years. It held all our chaos and all our clarity, a little ‘playpen’ where we could live, play and experiment like teenagers again. We wanted to celebrate long-form, the idea of an album as a whole body of work.

Born to a Sri Lankan family in South Africa and raised in Australia, Vandal’s path into punk came through a deeply eclectic musical foundation. Raised on soul, gospel, and South Indian music before studying jazz at the Victorian College of the Arts, her perspective shifted dramatically after discovering artists like Radiohead, Fugazi, Pixies, and Björk through classmates.

To me, Ian MacKaye is just as expressive as Billie Holiday,” she says.

That intersection — between strict cultural expectations and the liberating chaos of punk — has informed Vandal’s work ever since, resulting in a sound that is as emotionally expansive as it is confrontational.

Following her recent Coachella debut and a run of Australia and New Zealand dates supporting Deftones, Vandal will head to Europe this June for a packed festival season including Rock im Park, Rock Am Ring, Roskilde, Rock Werchter, Pinkpop, Hurricane, and Outbreak, alongside additional support dates with Deftones and Limp Bizkit. She’ll then return to North America for appearances at Lollapalooza and Osheaga before closing out the summer at All Points East in London. Additional dates are expected to be announced soon.

Known for explosive live performances that pull equally from punk, jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music, Vandal has previously toured with Queens of the Stone Age, IDLES, and The Prodigy — building a reputation as one of the most dynamic performers in contemporary heavy music.
