BMI Stage Celebrates 20 Years at Lollapalooza

In just two days, the BMI Stage will celebrate two decades of introducing hidden gems to Lollapalooza line-ups. BMI established its stage in 2006 with the mission of platforming emerging and innovative artists at one of the world’s biggest music festivals. Since then, the BMI Stage has become a staple of the Lollapalooza experience for festivalgoers eager to discover who’s up next in music.
In the past 20 years, The BMI Stage has welcomed artists across every corner of the musical spectrum: from country and hip-hop to indie rock, electronic, pop, and deathcore with Lorna Shore in 2022. Many of today’s biggest names once stood on the same stage early in their careers, including Lady Gaga, who performed in 2007 before becoming one of pop music’s biggest icons.
That same year, indie rock hitmakers Cage the Elephant also took the stage. Ke$ha showcased her pop hits in 2009 before the release of her debut album, and X Ambassadors practiced their folky pop sound that would soon take over radio stations. Rappers like Young Thug, Chance the Rapper, and Vic Mensa also took over the BMI stage in the mid-2010s before they became household names.
“It just felt like that performance was a massive win for all the kids of Chicago,” said Vic Mensa, reminiscing on the performance of Chicago hip hop band Kids These Days at the BMI stage in 2011.
Pop artist Bebe Rexha, who played the stage a year later, credits the experience for propelling her “into that world, getting out there and being in front of tons of different people.” She stated, “I will always carry that experience with me.”
That commitment to spotlighting the next generation of artists remains stronger than ever in 2026. Throughout the four days of Lollapalooza, the BMI Stage will host performances from 24 of today’s most exciting emerging acts, offering audiences an eclectic mix of genres and styles. From indie folk-rock and Latin pop to melancholic country and electronic experimentation, this year’s lineup reflects the diversity and genre-defying sounds that have become synonymous with the BMI Stage.
Among this year’s featured performers are multiple bands including Evening Elephants, SNACKTIME, Porch Light, and Surfing for Daisy, each bringing a distinct, multifaceted sound. Chicago’s own The Braymores showcase an alternative blend of folk, rock, and lo-fi feeling, alongside Case Oats, another band that has become a Chicago fixture. Simon Grossmann highlights the growing influence and popularity of Latin pop and the indie Latin scene in Chicago.
Country fans can catch rising talent Elizabeth Nichols alongside Calder Allen, Next of Kin, and The Creekers; while pop artists Bella Kay, Whitney Whitney, Valencia Grace, and Ella Boh bring their viral momentum to the stage. If you’re looking for R&B futurists, the BMI stage offers sets from Jae Stephens and Justine Sky. CHALK, Emi Grace, and ivri bring genre-bending to the lineup with performances that blur musical lines in exciting ways. Rounding out the diverse lineup is Germany’s INK who is known and loved for her work on major cultural projects like Beyonce’s GRAMMY® Award-winning COWBOY CARTER, RENAISSANCE and Kendrick Lamar’s GNX. Her debut EP released in October of last year and has already garnered a strong name for herself with singles, “Turquoise Cowboy,” “Hoedown,” and “Sweet Tea.”
In true Lollapalooza fashion, the BMI Stage experience extends beyond the music. To commemorate its 20th anniversary, BMI is inviting fans to take part in BMI Bingo throughout the weekend. Festivalgoers can pick up a bingo card at the BMI Stage, complete interactive challenges, and enter for a chance to win exclusive access to the BMI Backstage Lounge.
This year, Lollapalooza returns to Chicago’s Grant Park from July 30 through August 2, bringing together more than 170 artists across multiple stages. Beyond the music, festivalgoers can enjoy attractions including a roller rink, custom souvenirs, an expansive food lineup featuring many of Chicago’s most beloved restaurants, and, for the first time this year, a Ferris wheel.
As the BMI Stage enters its third decade, it continues to introduce audiences to the artists they’ll be talking about tomorrow. For anyone looking to discover the next breakout star before the rest of the world catches on, there’s no better place to start than the BMI Stage.
