Cholita, one of Jamaica’s most compelling emerging artists, announces her debut EP Broken Promises, arriving June 26 via Mixpak Records. Alongside the announcement, she shares a new single, “Too Damn Hard,” offering a first look at the emotional and sonic range of the project.
On “Too Damn Hard,” Cholita leans into vulnerability, unpacking the aftermath of a relationship that couldn’t be saved. Set against a fluid dancehall backdrop, the track captures a conflicted emotional space—relief that something has ended, intertwined with the ache of what might have been. “I summoned the ocean, drowning in hope, I wanted us to survive,” she sings. Anchored by a skippy dembow rhythm and lifted by a soaring instrumental chorus, the song also reflects her Peruvian heritage, closing with a Spanish-language outro.
Broken Promises, a six-track debut crafted between Kingston and Los Angeles, was created in collaboration with producer Dre Skull (Burna Boy, Popcaan, Vybz Kartel). The project sidesteps strict genre classification, landing instead in a global pop space rooted in dancehall and the Caribbean’s bass-forward, movement-driven traditions. Featuring appearances from artists like Skillibeng on “Without You,” the EP underscores why Cholita is quickly gaining traction with both listeners and the industry.
About:
Cholita’s music is reflective of Jamaica’s rich musical history. Like so many artists who have emerged from the island, her sound has an instant global resonance. Drawing from a kaleidoscope of genres – dancehall, contemporary R&B, hip hop, pop, indie, Latin – she builds her own sonic language: hypnotic, sensual, and defiant. Raised in Kingston by a Jamaican father immersed in the country’s music industry and a Peruvian mother rooted in Lima’s jazz scene, music was never just a backdrop; it was a way of life.
Whether you’re listening alone in your bedroom or in the middle of a sweaty dance floor, her songs land with visceral power: anchored by sound system low-end and polyrhythmic syncopation, yet lit with lyrical intimacy. Still early in her journey, Cholita already sounds like an artist with a point of view, weaving her heritage and instinct into songs that move.
