Born At Midnite Makes a Powerful Chicago Debut at Schubas

Review and photos by Cara Col

Touring together for the first time, Montreal-based duo Born at Midnite played their Chicago debut at Schubas on August 19. After the excitement of their debut album released this summer, a devoted crowd was already waiting in anticipation. Born at Midnite performed with an energy that Chicago will certainly welcome back.

Amery Sandford and David Carriere create a sound influenced by 80s synth pop and the indie sound of Montreal’s music scene. It blends glossy synths and reverbed guitar chords with the intimacy of bedroom pop. Sandford’s use of samples adds another layer of catchiness and groove to their sound. Though the vocal performance was simple, the delivery of their relatable lyrics clearly resonated with the crowd. Live, the duo showcases an artistic chemistry that translates to the audience as pure fun, allowing for an easy connection with the crowd.

It was a show where everyone was participating rather than simply watching. During one of their hits, “Y o Y,” Sandford took advantage of the dance break by hopping off the stage and taking a fan by the hand. Sandford twirled the fan before moving to the middle of the dance floor. A Quimby’s Bookstore shoutout earned a noticeable reaction, while “Hearts Working Overtime” stood out as an apparent fan favorite.

The setlist continued to offer plenty of variety. “Like Fire Like Ice” helped establish the band’s laid-back, synth-driven side, while “Spotlite” and “*69” continued to showcase their knack for catchy choruses and emotional songwriting. “Born at Midnite” became an especially strong sing-along moment, with the crowd joining in. “Alternity” slowed down the tempo and stood out for its soft mood. The song’s driving drums complemented the alluring, rich bassline, providing a welcome contrast.

“Rockstar” featured playful vocal effects that created an almost cartoonish, candy-coated quality – like Gummibär, which fit the band’s willingness to have fun with their sound. They closed off the set with “I Haven’t Forgotten You,” which shows off their great use of samples, with Judie Tzuke’s “For You” intertwined between Born at Midnite’s original composition.

For a band playing its first tour, Born at Midnite displayed an impressive sense of identity and stage presence. They brought catchy songs, strong chemistry, and a genuine connection with the people in the room. If this was their first visit to Chicago, it hopefully won’t be their last.
