Fish, Streetlights, and Neon Pulse: The Afterglow Tour with Cannons, Bob Moses & Oxis
Concert

Review and photos by: Nicholas Stevens

On April 22nd in Chicago, Illinois, the co-headlining Afterglow Tour, starring Cannons and Bob Moses, took over The Salt Shed for a sold-out show filled with electronic atmosphere, dreamy lights, and nonstop movement.

The doors opened around 6:30, and it was already filling up with the crowd packing in and settling into the room. On stage, a single folding table was propped open alongside two Fender guitars and electronic equipment, giving the setup a simple but curious look before the night began.

The lights went dark for the opening act. Oxis, a slender woman with short blue hair, took the stage in an almost timid manner at first, but once she started to sing, she immediately drew me in. Her vocals seemed reserved, yet there were many moments where her voice soared through the venue, capturing great responses from the audience, which was most evident with “Long Sardine x Mr. Brightside” in particular.

Her music, a blend of electronic music with looping beats, guitar, and bass, and behind her, a giant floating fish that blazed a bright white in the background.

Throughout her set, her beautiful sounds made me feel like I was being put into an electronic trance, and the lighting matched that of an aurora borealis that had the entire venue vibing.

She recently released two great new singles, “Grey Mullet” and “Scup,” which you can listen to here. Oxis is only just beginning to scratch the surface with her artistic vision; she’s definitely an artist to watch.

Next up was Cannons, whom I am a huge fan of personally. Promoting their new album, Everything Glows, the band walked on stage with a moon hanging above them and a glowing street lamp below. The visual design immediately fit their sound: soft, romantic, and dreamy, but still cool and polished.

Cannons opened with “Loving You,” from their 2023 release, Heartbeat Highway, and the crowd was instantly locked in. The band looked like they were having a good time, but the crowd was truly grooving, eager to see them again. However, it was bittersweet in that it was great to watch them perform, yet keyboardist and bassist Paul Davis was not on stage with them. Having recently had a medical emergency, but is thankfully on the mend and doing better now.

After I finished taking my photos, I watched everyone around me sing and dance to every song. It was hard not to feel the love in the room. Every Cannons song is great in my opinion, so it was easy to enjoy the set from start to finish.

One thing I appreciated was the way the band members interacted during guitar solos and seemed to genuinely have fun on stage. Even during the deeper moments, they kept the audience connected. Before singing “Take Me To Tokyo,” lead singer Michelle Joy explained the deeper meaning behind the track, which added emotion to the performance.

Their set consisted of a great mix of songs from their discography, including seven songs from their 2026 release, Everything Glows, and going all the way back to the title track from their 2014 EP Up All Night.

Sound seemed to be about the only thing wrong with the night, where the levels for Oxis and Cannons seemed muted in contrast to Bob Moses’ set. When Bob Moses opened with “Time Of Your Life” from their latest release, Blink, I thought my eardrums would burst while taking the photos. But everyone in the audience was indeed having the time of their lives.

Tom Howie, Jimmy Vallance, and company were backed by a video wall, four pairs of bright LED bars, and a great lighting rig above them, which all helped accentuate the moods of the songs well, like with “Last Forever,” a song basically about not taking any second of good moments for granted.

Tom Howie’s vocals were smooth and even during some of the quietest moments of the show, like “Enough To Believe” from 2018’s Battle Lines album; his vocals felt more like an instrument floating on the surface of the music while singing some powerful lyrics.

One of the surprises of the evening was a cover of “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails, which they pulled off quite effectively despite never in a million years ever thinking they would cover a song like that.

The lights, the music, and the crowd all came together perfectly, three great acts and one phenomenal evening. Man, this was a freaking fun show. From melodic electronic jams to heavy dancing beats, Bob Moses delivered an amazing performance and closed the night with the kind of energy that makes a sold-out room feel completely alive.
