World Food Programme (WFP) Goodwill Ambassador Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye has committed $350,000 from his XO Humanitarian Fund to fuel WFP’s emergency response in Jamaica following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa. The donation will help WFP rapidly scale up relief operations aimed at reaching up to 200,000 people as they work to recover from the Category 5 storm.
Hurricane Melissa struck the Caribbean at the end of October, impacting nearly six million people across the region and hitting Jamaica the hardest. In coordination with the Government of Jamaica, WFP is providing emergency assistance to the most vulnerable families, ensuring they can meet their immediate food needs. To date, more than 9,000 Jamaicans have received food kits containing rice, lentils, canned fish and meat, and vegetable oil. Across Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti, WFP has reached 254,000 people with life-saving food distributions.
“We are grateful to The Weeknd for his generous support for WFP’s urgent relief efforts. His compassion will provide much-needed comfort and resilience to Jamaicans as they navigate this crisis,” said Barron Segar, World Food Program USA President and CEO. “When it comes to humanitarian disasters, WFP is among the world’s first responders — but our work is only possible through the generosity of private sector donors and global partners.”
In emergencies, WFP’s priority is to deliver food as quickly as possible so families can stabilize, recover, and rebuild.
Every contribution helps bring food, hope, and support to people facing hunger and displacement. To join The Weeknd in supporting WFP’s hurricane relief efforts, visit wfpusa.org/helpjamaica.
