Spanish and African-American artist Gabriela Richardson announces her debut album ISOLA, due out February 20. Alongside the announcement, Richardson unveils “Mononoke,” a striking new single and music video that offers an intimate entry point into the emotional and sonic world of the forthcoming record.
Written following a formative trip to Mallorca, “Mononoke” captures a sense of quiet nostalgia and self-reflection—an unresolved moment suspended in time. Drawing inspiration from the lush orchestration of Arthur Verocai and the spiritual duality of the anime classic Princess Mononoke, the song explores the tension between light and shadow, and the vulnerability required to embrace the full spectrum of one’s identity.
Sung entirely in Spanish, “Mononoke” meditates on self-acceptance, honoring both tenderness and discomfort as essential parts of becoming whole. The track marks a significant creative milestone for Richardson, as it is the first song she has produced herself and her first time composing with wind instruments.
Created in collaboration with Barcelona-based producer Gerard Valeta, with additional production from Pierre Rousseau, “Mononoke” expands Richardson’s sonic palette while remaining deeply personal. Though the most challenging track for her to release, it stands as the emotional centerpiece of ISOLA—and a powerful statement of artistic arrival.
