Foreman and Rockingham were part of the Deep Blue Organ Trio along with guitarist Bobby Broom\, and they also recorded together with guitarist Henry Johnson and saxophonist Red Holloway. Long-time fixtures in Chicago\, they opened for Steely Dan for eight years and were inducted into the Hammond B3 Hall of Fame.The Soul Message Band previously recorded such albums as Soulful Days\, Live At The Blue Llama\, and People. On Full Circle\, in addition to its co-leaders\, The Soul Message Band features its newest member altoist Greg Jung on two songs and has appearances by guitarist Lee Rothenberg\, tenor-saxophonist Geof Bradfield\, and Steve Eisen on baritone and tenor with Typhanie Monique contributing background vocals on four numbers.Jimmy Burns\, who turned 82 in 2025\, was born in the Mississippi Delta as the youngest of 11 children. When he was 12\, he moved with his family to Chicago where he has lived ever since. He recorded a series of singles starting in 1964\, took some time off to raise his family\, and in the early 1990s became active again\, leading six albums for the Delmark label during 1996-2007.Full Circle teams Jimmy Burns with the Soul Message Band and is a joyful listening experience. With the instrumentalists playing in the tradition of such classic 1960s soul jazz groups as those of Charles Earland\, Jack McDuff\, and Jimmy Smith\, Burns sounds quite comfortable\, contributing soulful and expressive vocals on eight of the ten songs. He particularly excels on the blues World Of Trouble\, over the funky groove of I Really Love You\, the rollicking Too Much Lovin\, and Rock Me Mama\, playing a bit of guitar on the latter.The Soul Message Band takes Aint That Funk For You and Since I Fell For You as instrumental features for altoist Greg Jung\, Chris Foreman is a major force throughout the date both as an accompanist to the singer and as a soloist\, and Greg Rockingham keeps the music grooving. Full Circle is a fine showcase for Jimmy Burns and the Soul Message Band and is easily recommended for fans of high-quality blues\, soul jazz\, blues ballads\, and soulful music.

A follow-up to Dunham’s 2022 debut CLEARING\, it explores themes of (im)materiality\, transformation\, and eternal return in the wake of devastating loss: the deaths of Dunham’s longtime partner and creative collaborator Sophie in 2021\, as well as her brother in a fatal hit-and-run in 2024. Immersed in cycles of death\, Dunham emerged with a powerful record that channels grief into a study of how love persists beyond the limits of flesh—and through a process of transmutation can be alchemized into heat\, rhythm\, vapor\, and light. Zooming between the intimate and the infinite\, Hold Onto Me Infinity is a charged testament to music’s ability to cross timelines\, physical thresholds\, and lifespans—while dancing in the space between this physical world\, and the one beyond. \nOpening track “Angel\,” released on March 11\, draws from an early memory in Hayden and Sophie’s relationship\, when Sophie met Hayden’s father for the first time\, and responded to his skeptical questions with a bad girl’s sense of sly mischief. Produced by Hudson Mohawke—a chief collaborator on the album —the song positions a loved one posthumously as a guardian angel\, introducing a question that reverberates throughout the rest of the album: where do the dead go\, and how do we experience them in new forms? \nMuch of Hold Onto Me Infinity was recorded in Iceland\, where Dunham was researching aluminum and volcanic magma as materials that are volatile and light\, yet capable of holding immense energy. Fire recurs as a central metaphor of transformation through its potential to catalyze change and dematerialization. The album closes with the sound of a match striking\, referencing a personal grief ritual of Dunham’s: burning bouquets left from friends at their studio in order to watch the flowers change forms. \nThe album cover\, shot by Michael Bailey Gates\, reflects this liminal blur between the existential and elemental. Made without artificial effects\, it uses a glass sculpture made by Dunham\, pyrotechnics\, mirror reflections\, and a sunset poking through a pierced window to create a portal within the image that holds both this physical reality and another world. This analog approach was a necessity that emerged out of Dunham’s intermittent loss of vision over the past seven years\, which made them extremely sensitive to artificial light. This condition continues to have profound impacts on their senses: when their sight receded\, other (extra)-sensory skills emerged; when it returned\, they felt extra-embodied in their body and the juiciness of being. \nThat physicality is reflected in the album’s drum-forward sonic palette\, where the vibrations are designed to be felt in the listeners’ bodies as much as they are heard. On one specific track on the album\, first recorded in 2016\, a recording of Dunham’s loved one’s voice serves as a reminder that music can surpass bodies\, and in the spirit of eternal return\, those we love have chances to come back again. \n“This album has an earth imprint\, but it’s really a message for the sky\,” Dunham said. “It’s like an offering —I’m singing upward.”

Only one progressive hippie allying with like-minded conspirators\, rolling out the New Grass revolution\, and then leaving the genres torch-bearing band behind as it reached its commercial peak.There is only one consensus pick of peers and predecessors\, of the traditionalists\, the rebels\, and the next gen devotees. Musics ultimate inside outsider. Or is it outside insider? There is only one Sam Bush.On a Bowling Green\, Kentucky cattle farm in the post-war 1950s\, Bush grew up an only son\, and with four sisters. His love of music came immediately\, encouraged by his parents record collection and\, particularly\, by his father Charlie\, a fiddler\, who organized local jams. Charlie envisioned his son someday a staff fiddler at the Grand Ole Opry\, but a clear days signal from Nashville brought to Bushs television screen a tow-headed boy named Ricky Skaggs playing mandolin with Flatt & Scruggs\, and an epiphany for Bush. At 11\, he purchased his first mandolin.As a teen fiddler\, Bush was a three-time national champion in the junior division of the National Oldtime Fiddlers Contest. He recorded an instrumental album\, Poor Richards Almanac\, as a high school senior and in the spring of 1970 attended the Fiddlers Convention in Union Grove\, NC. There he heard the New Deal String Band\, taking notice of their rock-inspired brand of progressive bluegrass.Acuff offered him a spot in his band. Bush politely turned down the country titan. It was not the music he wanted to play. He admired the grace of Flatt d discovered electrified alternatives to tradition in the Osborne Brothers and manifest destiny in The Dillards.I started working at the Holiday Inn as a busboy\, Bush recalls. Ebo Walker and Lonnie Peerce came in one night asking if I wanted to come to Louisville and play five nights a week with the Bluegrass Alliance. That was a big\, ol Hell yes\, lets go.Bush played guitar in the group\, then began playing mandolin after recruiting guitarist Tony Rice to the fold. Following a fallout with Peerce in 1971\, Bush and his Alliance mates – Walker\, Courtney Johnson\, and Curtis Burch – formed the New Grass Revival\, issuing the bands debut\, New Grass Revival. Walker left soon after\, replaced temporarily by Butch Robins\, with the quartet solidifying around the arrival of bassist John Cowan.There were already people who had deviated from Bill Monroes style of bluegrass\, Bush explains.
