One of the most underrated rock bands of the ’80s post-punk era, Milwaukee’s Violent Femmes created a genre of music that was as unique as their name. They were pioneers of the underground alternative-rock scene before it was cool.

The beloved cult band’s acoustic-driven folk-punk sound was original and immediately recognizable. Their stripped-down approach conveyed a sense of urgency and raw emotion.

It took a while, but the band’s infectious, jittery brilliance could not be denied. After their emergence, they released their debut album, Violent Femmes. From start to finish, this platinum-selling LP remains a stone-cold classic.

Full of angst-ridden anthems, their collection of 10 studio albums provides a rich repertoire of music. Several tracks have been featured in movies and on TV to evoke ’80s nostalgia or quirky, restless energy.

Now, a bit older and wiser, the Femmes happily celebrate their 45th year together. Be sure to catch them live before they’re “Gone Daddy Gone.”

Fun Fact: In 1981, a member of The Pretenders saw the Femmes playing on the sidewalk in front of Milwaukee’s Oriental Theatre where The Pretenders were about to perform. Singer Chrissie Hynde invited them inside to play a brief set before they took the stage.
