London-based singer-songwriter CHARLS returns with her powerful new single, “Out In The Open,” continuing a run of emotionally candid releases that includes the self-affirming “Trust My Gut,” the anthemic “Begging On My Birthday,” and the vulnerable “Heads Up.” Previously earning co-signs from Elton John and Lewis Capaldi, she continues to build momentum as an independent artist, shaping a sound defined by emotional honesty and striking intimacy.
A timeless, piano-driven ballad, “Out In The Open” highlights her expressive vocal delivery as she explores the painful distance that can grow from unspoken words in a romantic relationship. “TThe longer things are left unsaid, the further apart it drives you,” she explains. “I wrote this song after witnessing this happen to people close to me, then went through the same situation myself and re-listened to the demo. It completely knocked me for six and I knew I had to release it.”
Ahead of her recent performance at KOKO, she recorded an exclusive live session of “Out In The Open” at the Recording Studio at Ellen’s as part of Miraval’s Artist Spotlight series. Released alongside a live video, the session showcases the raw emotional depth and simplicity that defines her artistry. “It was so special to be given the opportunity to record this live version of ‘Out In The Open’ in exactly the way it was intended to be heard,” she says. “Live, raw and unfiltered. One take, one shot, working with the most talented team at KOKO studios.”
Initially discovered by GRAMMY Award–nominated producer Toby Gad—known for his work with Beyoncé, Fergie, Jessie J, and John Legend—CHARLS has since embraced full creative independence, entering a new chapter defined by authenticity and artistic control. Her forthcoming debut album promises a step-by-step, real-time journey through heartbreak and self-reclamation, capturing empowerment through vulnerability.
With previous support from publications including Billboard, CLASH, Wonderland, and The Line of Best Fit, she has earned widespread recognition for her soulful vocals and introspective songwriting. She has shared stages with artists such as Lewis Capaldi, Tom Odell, Jess Glynne, and Bastille, and has performed at major festivals including Reading & Leeds Festival, Lollapalooza Berlin, and Isle of Wight Festival.
As she reintroduces herself to audiences worldwide, CHARLS stands ready to reclaim her narrative—this time fully on her own terms.
