GRAMMY-winning singer-songwriter, poet, activist, and multi-instrumentalist Allison Russell returns with a powerful new EP, Rainbows, out today. The three-track release features her first original music in two years, anchored by the luminous title track. Accompanying the release is a visualizer directed by Mason Poole. The EP also includes striking reinterpretations of Sarah McLachlan’s “Mary” and “Angel.” Russell will join McLachlan on tour this summer, with the pair also set to perform together at the JUNO Awards later this month in tribute to Joni Mitchell.

Allison Russell on “Rainbows” “There is improbable magic all around us, and limitless magic in our own hearts and minds and imaginations. “Rainbows” is a song about reconnecting with our own essential magic —a magic maybe we thought we’d lost —so that we can pour it back into the World. It felt right to pair “Rainbows” with these two covers of Sarah McLachlan’s magical work. Sarah is a trailblazer for all women in music — her Lilith Fair taught an entire generation of girls & women that we were never in competition, always stronger in community.”

The release arrives amid a dynamic stretch for Russell, who recently completed her second Broadway run as Persephone in the acclaimed Hadestown. She first stepped into the role in November 2024, following a year spent opening for Hozier on his Unreal Unearth Tour across the U.S. and Europe. Their collaboration, “Wildflower & Barley,” marked Russell’s debut on the Billboard Hot 100.

Russell’s ascent has been matched by an extraordinary list of accolades. She has earned eight GRAMMY nominations and one win, along with multiple honors across the Americana, folk, and international music communities. Highlights include a Polaris Prize nomination, recognition as Billboard Women in Music Canada’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year, and a JUNO Award win for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year.

Beyond her musical achievements, Russell continues to be a vital cultural force and advocate. She curated the landmark “Once And Future Sounds: Roots and Revolution” set at the Newport Folk Festival in 2021, and spearheaded the Love Rising All-Star benefit concert in Nashville, raising over $550,000 in support of LGBTQIA+ causes while drawing national attention to anti-trans and anti-drag legislation in Tennessee. Expanding her creative reach even further, Russell has also announced her debut book—a memoir inspired by her life and the stories behind Outside Child and The Returner.
